At Half Penny Steps Health Centre, we are committed to providing high-quality, evidence-based care to all our patients. We understand that some individuals registering with our practice may have been diagnosed with medical conditions while abroad and are now seeking ongoing treatment or management in the UK.
Policy Objectives
To ensure safe and effective care, we have outlined the following protocol for such cases:
1. Initial Assessment Required
All patients requesting ongoing treatment for a condition diagnosed outside the UK will need to undergo a full clinical assessment by one of our GPs. This is necessary to:
- Verify the diagnosis
- Understand the clinical history and rationale for previous treatment
- Assess alignment with UK clinical guidelines and NHS policies
2. Documentation and Medical Records
Patients must provide comprehensive medical records from their healthcare provider abroad. This should include:
- Diagnostic test results (translated into English where possible)
- Summary of clinical notes
- Prescriptions and medication history
- Any relevant imaging (MRI, CT scans, etc.)
Without appropriate documentation, it may not be possible to initiate or continue treatment.
3. Review of Medications
Some medications prescribed abroad may not be licensed for use in the UK or may not be available through the NHS. In such cases:
- Alternative medications will be considered in line with UK clinical guidelines
- A referral to a UK specialist may be required before initiating treatment
4. Specialist Referrals
If the condition requires specialist input, a referral to an NHS consultant may be made. Waiting times and criteria for referral will apply as per standard NHS procedures.
5. Monitoring and Follow-Up
Ongoing monitoring and follow-up will be arranged according to UK clinical protocols. Patients may be required to undergo repeat tests or imaging in the UK.
6. Treatment Limitations
Please be aware:
- The practice cannot guarantee continuation of treatment based solely on diagnoses or regimens provided abroad.
- Private treatments or investigations conducted outside the NHS may not automatically be continued or funded within NHS care pathways.
7. Non-UK Prescriptions
We cannot prescribe medications based solely on foreign prescriptions. All prescriptions must be clinically reviewed and meet UK standards.
Our Commitment
We appreciate the complexity of transitioning care from one country to another and will do our best to provide a safe, fair, and patient-centred approach in line with NHS regulations and best practice guidelines.
